Since many of the community gardeners have some shade on their plots, I researched which edible plants might grow in less than desirable conditions. Most fruiting vegetables and fruits need at least 5-6 hours of direct sunlight, but there are some herbs, leafy greens and root vegetables that will produce with at least 3-4 hours of sun. Yields will be lower but they are worth a try and some experimentation might yield a pleasant surprise. The following is are lists I have compiled from various internet sites. Vegetables: Arugula, rhubarb, beans rutabagas, beets, sorrel, broccoli, salsify, Brussels sprouts, cabbage spinach, celery, cauliflower, summer squash, cress, endive, garlic, kale, kohlrabi, leaf lettuce, leeks, peas, potato, radish, pumpkin. Herbs: Lemon balm, bee balm, catnip, mints, salad burnet, calamint, chervil, gotu kola, herba buena, sweet cicley, sage (berggarten), tarragon, thyme, coriander, parsley, lovage, lady’s mantle (dwarf), scented geranium, Caraway, borage, leopard’s bane, sweet myrtle, alpine strawberry, flowering jasmine. Shrubs: blackberry, current, gooseberry and some blueberries.
